Life in mission

Mission groups

Our church’s life together is lived out largely through its mission groups. Mission groups are small, having between two and ten persons who have been called together in the Spirit to a specific common work of love and justice in the world.  They are the primary way that our church organizes its ministries in the world.
And at the same time, involvement in a mission group is often a life-changing personal experience.  Mission group members commit to shared practices to nourish our individual capacities to hear and faithfully follow Jesus’ call upon our lives. These include commitments to regular prayer, study, worship, and engagement in the life of the group.
Within our mission groups,  we seek to be as deeply known by each other as each of us knows ourself, and to seek to deeply know others in the group. We practice honesty, accountability and forgiveness, as we also support each other in discovering and expressing our unique God-given gifts.
We seek to have both our work in the world and our lives themselves be expressions of possibility and solidarity, where good news is proclaimed to the poor, freedom is proclaimed for prisoners, the blind come to see, and all who are oppressed come to know greater freedom.
Presently,  our church has two mission groups:
•  Capital Gains is called to connect, support, accompany, and encourage people of color with low and moderate-income who desire to build equity through home-ownership. The group raises money that will be available for costs or fees associated with buying a home, and advocates for increased DC funding for affordable home-ownership.
•. Heading Home is called to support men and women returning home from incarceration. The group is in relationship with people prior to release, and works to build networks of support for returning citizens.
