welcome to
Bread of Life Church
We are a church committed to follow Jesus’s call to live in ways that are consistent with God’s intention that all people, and also God’s good earth, can thrive. We are called to pursue racial and economic equity, and to be repairers of that breach through specific, local relationships. We work to support new economic relationships, practices and structures that are life giving for all, and to eliminate barriers, personal and corporate, between races and classes. Through our gathered life, we attempt to embody alternatives to a culture that overly prioritizes protection of private and corporate accumulation.
At the same time, we know our outward action is only as good as its roots in a surrendered inner life of prayer, and in our life together in community. Jesus called us to a new way of being; and our doing must flow from grounded being.
Why our Name
Throughout scripture, bread is a central image for having what is needed for life. Bread is the foundation for physical sustenance. Many of the most important stories of our tradition involve feeding miracles that rely on it. Manna was given in the desert, the widow shared her last crumbs with Elijah, Jesus multiplied the loaves for the crowd. Without physical bread, there is no life. Life has been created with all of the resources needed for abundant living. There is enough bread!
At the same time, bread is not enough. Life is more than physical sustenance. When facing the tempter, Jesus responded that people cannot live by “bread alone.” There is another kind of bread, another foundation to sustenance which is beyond the physical. The eternal.
Abundant life requires both forms of bread. Our church seeks to live in the intersection of both dimensions where truest life is found.
